Future Imaginaries

Future Imaginaries presents excerpts from 70 speculative fiction stories and future imaginaries created by students aged 12-15 during 2023-2024, as part of the international ‘Speculative Futures’ project. The project explored how young people in Australia, Canada, England, and Wales read, write, and discuss speculative fiction to envision and critically engage with possible futures.
The anthology showcases brief excerpts from students’ stories, written in response to a prompt about the future of their city or town, with themes of sustainability, technology, or social justice. Grouped under the headings ‘Blooming Tentacles,’ ‘Strange Contraptions,’ and ‘No Hope and A Lot of Hope,’ the 70 entries offer glimpses into imagined futures – serving as springboards for discussion and further reflection.
Thank you to the students who contributed their time and creativity, and to the teachers and schools in Cardiff (Wales), Laval (Canada), London (England), Melbourne (Australia), and Merthyr Tydfil (Wales) for their generous support in bringing this project to life.
Thank you to Therese Keogh who edited the longer stories into propositions for the collection, and designed the book.
And to Ashley Ronning for illustrating the book and fold out poster.
Thank you to the other 129 students who participated in writing workshops, focus groups, and surveys as part of the larger project.
As a limited edition art book Future Imaginaries is now out of print.
